Emergency Resources for Homeless Pregnant Women in Alabama

If you are homeless and pregnant in Alabama, there is help available.

Facing Homelessness During Pregnancy in Alabama

If you are facing homelessness during pregnancy in Alabama, some organizations can help with your needs. These organizations are both public and private.

Housing Resources for Homeless Pregnant Women

There are several homes for pregnant women in Alabama.

Pathways Women’s Home: Stepping Stones, Birmingham, AL

Mary’s Shelter Gulf Coast: Provides housing for pregnant women through a 15-month program.

Located in Elberta, AL, Baldwin County, but with a broader service area.

Baby Steps: Auburn University and University of Alabama. Offers housing for expecting students and mothers. In addition, it offers support for basic needs so that mothers who are expecting children while attending college can continue their studies.

RiahRose Home for Children: Huntsville, AL, providing emergency shelter and transitional housing for pregnant women and families with children. Social services are offered.

Lifeline Village: Tuscaloosa, AL. Accepts pregnant women 19 years of age and older and parents of children under the age of five. Residents have access to medical care, life skills classes, and people who can help plan for independent living.

Family Promise of Montgomery: Montgomery, AL, an emergency housing program provided at no cost.

In addition to shelter, these organizations can provide basic needs like food and personal care.

Social workers can help you address long-term housing stability, identify needs, and access assistance.

Because these organizations are private, they usually don’t have residency requirements. They might have locations they focus on or primarily serve. Each organization has its own rules for who qualifies, how they operate, and what services are provided.

In addition, some organizations provide temporary shelter that are not limited to pregnant women. However, an organization that focuses on pregnant women may be best suited for your needs.

Healthcare and Prenatal Services Available

There are multiple ways for pregnant homeless women to access healthcare and prenatal services. Private organizations may provide free or low-cost care. Government organizations can also provide benefits.

For example, pregnancy may qualify you for Medicaid. The application process is streamlined for pregnant women. Medicaid coverage can begin three months into pregnancy and can last for up to 12 months postpartum. If you qualify, you receive full Medicaid coverage.

Participants in the Women, Infants, and Children Program can receive maternity care coordination services.

There are also private organizations that can help.

The COPE Pregnancy Center of Montgomery, AL offers baby supplies, maternity clothes, and children’s clothing. They also offer parenting classes and prenatal vitamins.

ARMS Maternity Wellness Center provides prenatal care regardless of financial situation.

The Huntsville Pregnancy Resource Center provides pregnancy support and parenting classes.

Food Assistance and Financial Support

You may qualify for food assistance through the state of Alabama. You may qualify for temporary cash assistance if you meet eligibility requirements. You may also qualify for WIC benefits, which can provide food and nutrition information.

Pregnancy is an exception to work requirements for food assistance lasting beyond three months.

Financial assistance is available for pregnant women through TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). The amount you may receive depends on family size.

Adoption Services and Counseling for Homeless Women

If you are looking for resources as a pregnant homeless woman, you are looking for long-term solutions.

Did you know that you may have your living expenses paid during pregnancy if you place your child for adoption?

If you choose adoption, the adoptive parent or parents are allowed to pay for living expenses and medical care. This payment is an act of charity and may include legitimate living expenses of the mother and maternity-connected healthcare. Nothing else of value may be paid for giving a child up for adoption. However, payment of adoption expenses can provide housing stability for you and your child. Expenses may include rent and utilities, groceries, transportation, clothing, and other expenses. It doesn’t cost you anything to place your child for adoption.

Adoption is one option for homeless pregnant women in Alabama. Whatever you choose, there are resources to assist you.

See Ala. Code § 26-10A-34(a).
